At Design Interviews
Interview with Jesse Stefani : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Jesse Stefani : The main inspiration for this lamp was to figure out a way to dim a fixture using a mechanical diffuser. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Jesse Stefani : Execution .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Jesse Stefani : To market it around the world specifically for restaurant and hotel design applications. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Jesse Stefani : I took a total of Three years to complete. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Jesse Stefani : This was not a commission. I had the idea and produced it over a three year period. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Jesse Stefani : I intend to produce this lamp in my personal shop. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Jesse Stefani : I saw a segment on Maker TV showing an artist using pulleys and cams to make kinetic art. After viewing this show I just had to make my own functional version. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Jesse Stefani : My Father Cary Stefani .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Jesse Stefani : Restaurant and hotel designers. I would consider private residential as well. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Jesse Stefani : I personally have not seen a design like this one in function alone. This design sits alone because it uses a articulating mechanical function to physically diffuse the light emanating from within the fixture. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Jesse Stefani : "Blossom" Literally the observation of a flower in bloom. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Jesse Stefani : There were two main categories manufacturing this lamp.
#1 Concept; done using mockups to test motion.
#2 Computer drawing/engineering; test mechanics and set for production.
.Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Jesse Stefani : The most unique aspect of this lamp is that the user has a direct interface with the fixture by mechanically opening and closing, giving the user the opportunity to "play" with how they want to style the room it sits in. Open for more light and close for less light. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Jesse Stefani : My father and I collaborated on this project. We executed most every aspect of the production from start to finish. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Jesse Stefani : Their was not much of a technology push on this piece, in fact, almost the opposite. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Jesse Stefani : Due to the complex mechanics on this lamp the frame steel work posed the biggest challenge to the design. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Jesse Stefani : I simply Goggled "lighting design competitions" .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Jesse Stefani : I now have a fairly good idea on how to use pulley systems and gear reducers. .Frank Scott: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?. Jesse Stefani : The real reason for doing this lamp is, in my head I kept saying wouldn't it be cool if........So I just did it. .
